What is a 92 or 93 Error Code from NCOA or CASS Processing?
Are you confused why a record looks deliverable but is being returned by your CASS or NCOA provider as non-deliverable? Address correction (CASS) or National Change of Address (NCOA) Processing will provide this error code for all returned addresses even if they were corrected successfully. Error codes 0-86 are deliverable. Often times the deliverable looking addresses are not because it is a 92 or 93 error code.
A 92 or 93 error code is a missing or an invalid secondary address. Here is an example for 3333 Renaissance Blvd, Ste 224 Bonita Springs, FL 34134 as follows:
- 92 Failed DPV because of invalid secondary i.e. 3333 Renaissance Blvd, Ste B Bonita Springs, FL 34134 (Ste B does not exist). This means that the input record matched to a master file record with the USPS but the input had a secondary number that the master file did not.
- 93 Failed DPV because of missing secondary i.e. 333 Renaissance Blvd Bonita Springs, FL 34134 (Ste is missing). In this case, the input matched the master file but the master file had a secondary number that the input did not.
Some mailers still mail to these addresses knowing that it will increase returned or non-deliverable mail. The postman could still deliver it based on their best efforts.
For example, you are a non-profit that is trying to mail to a sizeable donor of yours but their address is coming back as a 92 or 93 error code. You could mail to the address anyway in hopes that it will ve delivered. Another option is investigating the address on your own and finding the suite number. we definitely do not recommend mailing to prospective or purchased mailing lists with these error codes.
